Physician Certification: How You Can Know If Your Physician Is Certified In A Specialised Field

Medicine has become a very demanding and stimulating profession. Dedication is the basic requirement for every aspiring medical student if he or she wants to indulge in lifelong learning, which gets initiated in medical schools, colleges and residency trainings and continues throughout the career of any physician.

Almost every physician who gets educated in the US, including Canada and Puerto Rico completes around four years of education from a medical college or school of Osteopathic medicine. Physicians earn a Doctor of Medicine degree only after the completion of medical school. There are many students who attend medical colleges that are not in the US and are certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical graduates. Once the four years are completed, the physicians have to undergo seven years in graduate medical education. There is a variation in the length of training and it depends a lot on the specialty that is pursued by a physician. Obstetrics, family practice, orthopedics and gynaecology are some practice specialties. Once the residency training gets completed, they become eligible for physician certification by the medical specialty board.

Importance of physician certification:

If a physician is certified, it means that he or she has successfully completed years of schooling in a medical college or school, has fulfilled the requirements of residency and passed all the tests that were required by a territory or state in which the physician intends to practice. Physician certification means that after the completion of such lengthy and complicated procedures, the doctor chose the process of undergoing the voluntary certification where a group of certified physician judges him or her in a specific medicine specialty.

It is not required for a certified physician of a recognized specialty to hold a special certification in any sub-specialty of that specific field to be considered qualified enough for including some of the sub-specialty aspects within a specific specialty practice. There is a lot of importance in a specialty certification in a sub-specialty field, especially if he or she wants to prepare for a career in research work, teaching or practicing in that field. Generally people need to remember that a physician cannot be solely measured on how well he or she is keeping up to date in any specialty, but how the professional is able to use updated knowledge effectively in everyday practice. Usually certification is not considered similar to obtaining a licensure. There are physicians who want to keep practicing medicine on a legal basis need to be licensed from the territory or state in which they want to practice. But getting a licensure cannot be considered specialty specific; it sets the minimum requirements of competence for diagnosing and treating the patients, while certification is an indication of the expertise of a physician in a specialty or medical practice. A lot of peer evaluation and detailed testing is done in the initial process of certification, which is administered and designed by specialists in that particular area of medicine.
