Medical Education: What It Consists Of

Medical practitioners practice medical education either before their induction as doctors or after being inducted or for further training thereafter. Medical education varies significantly across the world and the teaching method differs in various medical colleges. Medical education is generally offered in two levels 1) entry-level education and 2) the postgraduate level of education.

· Entry-level education- This level of education is undertaken by medical schools, depending on the jurisdiction and the universities. The educational session is divided into pre-clinical and clinical studies. A pre-clinical study contains education in basic sciences like physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, pathology and pharmacology. And a clinical study contains classes in internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, surgery and psychiatry.

· Postgraduate medical education - After the entry level, the newly graduated doctors have to undergo an educational session, which is a supervised practice prior to registration, and this often lasts for one year and in medical terms this is called as internship or residency or provisional registration. In some jurisdictions, this training is commenced immediately after the completion of the entry-level training. Some jurisdictions commence this training on completion of entry-level training and some require the junior doctors to undergo some years of training before opting for specialization.

Medical education offers a unique learning experience and it helps augment the medical professionals overall knowledge and expands their specialized expertise. Most of the educational institutes design a curriculum in such a way that it enhances as well as balances the learner's needs. Medical education can be acquired through various ways like for example through consultations, home studies, discussions and online courses. Visiting fellowships can also be a part of such education.

In the United States, medical education includes all the educational activities involved in the training and education of doctors, from entry level to qualified specialists. Continuing professional development is another name for continuing medical education. This medical education helps the interns refresh their basic knowledge, and augment attentiveness. It also enhances the professional's agility as health care professionals. This skillfulness educates the professionals to develop their services towards patients.
